The Mazda 3 has been a staple on Australian roads for as long as it’s been around, offering practicality and reliability along with setting the benchmark for ride and handling in its class. It’s the dependable runaround for countless people, but to keep it dependable, keeping on top of its maintenance is a must. A big part of that is familiarising yourself with your vehicle’s service intervals so that you know when you’re due for a service. The oils and filters in your car have a limited life span and if neglected, could lead to a costly trip to the mechanic.

When you’re up for your next service, make sure you’ve got everything you need before jumping in. In this Service My Car Article, we’ll be looking at replacing the engine oil and oil filter, air filter, and cabin air filter. To confirm the part numbers that you need, jump on the Ryco Filters website and grab the details before heading down to your local parts store.

The 2009-2014 Mazda 3 SP25 uses a Ryco Z436 Oil Filter, an A1785 Air Filter, and an RCA275M N99 MicroShield Cabin Air Filter. When it comes to the best quality service products, Ryco has you covered.

Starting with the oil and filter change, get the car in the air and remove the plastic cover to gain access to the drain plug and oil filter.

To help the oil drain faster, it’s a good idea to start the service with the engine warm, but not so warm that you can’t work on it. After removing the sump plug, you can move on to the oil filter while the oil drains. If your oil filter is difficult to remove, Ryco offers removal tools to suit a wide range of oil filters to make removal a breeze.

With the old oil filter removed, clean the mounting surface, apply fresh oil to the o-ring on the new Ryco Oil Filter, and thread the new filter on. Only tighten the oil filter about a quarter turn past hand-tight. From there, refit the sump plug with a new sump plug washer.

With the sump plug refitted, you can then do your initial oil fill. Use a Ryco Flexi Funnel to help avoid any mess. These engines take about 4.5 litres of oil. After filling the correct amount and checking the dipstick, start the car and check any for leaks.

Moving onto the air filter, simply unclip the airbox lid, lift the lid away, and pull out the old filter.

From there, give the airbox a quick clean, and install the new Ryco Air Filter. Ensure that the seal is seated correctly within the airbox and re-install the lid.

To replace the cabin filter, you’ll first need to remove the glovebox compartment to gain access. Then, remove the cabin filter housing lid and take out the old cabin filter.

Once you’ve cleared the area of any debris, refit the new Ryco N99 MicroShield Cabin Air Filter, making sure that it is facing in the correct airflow direction as indicated on the filter.

From there, you can reinstall the cabin filter housing lid and glovebox components. The MicroShield is made of N99 medical grade media and can stop these minuscule pollutants from making their way inside the car by filtering out particles down to .3 microns and can stop viral and bacterial contaminants as well, plus dust and pollen.

With everything all buttoned up, take the vehicle for a road test and make sure everything’s in good working order. As always, we recommend using a local mechanic to service your Mazda 3.
