British classic car enthusiasts will rejoice to hear that RYCO Filters, Australia’s most respected automotive filtration company, has re-released the classic Z23 Spin-On Oil Filter.First released in the 1960’s the Z23 spin on filter with the unique ½ inch BSPF (½ -14 BSPF) thread size will be released this year after a more than decade in hiatus.
“Owners of classic British vehicles no longer have to make do with oil filter conversion kits. The brand new Z23 is better than OE, utilising 21st century filter media and presented with a nod to its historic past with retro touches. We wanted it to look the original Z23’s once in the engine bay,” said Alastair Hampton, General Manager of Engineering and Innovation.
The Z23 features a unique thread size, the only one in the Ryco range, and used on BMC engines of the period, Anti-drain back valve with a stack tube to support an inverted mounting position, pressure relief valve making it a modern OEM quality filter media and construction with superior efficiency, life and flow of the original Z23 oil filter.
The filter fits uniquely British vehicles utilising engines from the BMC B-Series family of 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder engines oil filter mount and fits British classics such as: Morris Major & Elite, Oxford, Austin 1800, Lancer, A40, A50, A55, A60 Cambridge, Freeway, Wolseley 24/80, 1500, 15/50, 15/60, 16/60, 24/80, MGA, MGB (1955 – 1974), MG Magnette ZA, ZB, Mk3 - 4, Riley one point five, 4/68, 4/72 and Leyland Marina P76.
The Z23 can be easily fitted or removed with the RST222 Spin On Filter Cup made especially for unique Ryco filters cans with a 92 mm diameter can with 8 flutes.
“The vintage appearance of the filter was researched by the Engineering team digging through the Ryco Filter archive and uncovering original samples to come up with the original can colour, retro screen print and retro style packaging for a more correct period appearance for the filter in the engine bay and more authentically pleasing for the classic car owner”, said Alastair.
The original dark grey colour of the filter cans was commonly referred to on the Ryco factory floor in Maribyrnong as ‘Battleship Grey”. The paint was excess dark grey battleship paint purchased post WWII by Ryco from the ship building yards in Williamstown in Victoria. After that supply of paint ran out the filter can’s continued to have varying shades grey throughout the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s until paint colours were fully standardized.
“We’ve already had people contact us to say that they were just about out of their stash of Z23’s purchased more than a decade ago, so the timing of the re-release is a relief for some owners”. The Z23 is available from all good Ryco stockists from July 2020. "If it's not on the shelf at one of our many distributors you can ask the counter staff to order in for you or purchase through their online websites" said Melissa Simpson, Marketing Manager.
